WORKING CLASS HEROES: BRIGG NEILSON
Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at 12:08PM
"Hey guys,
I'm 39 years old and have been skiing for 32 of them. I work as a chemist for a
pharmaceutical company in Salt Lake City. One of the perks to my job is that I
work four ten hour shifts every week. This gives me every Friday (usually by
myself), and Saturday (with the kids) to head up to the mountains. It is a very
rare occasion if I miss a weekend on the slopes. I spend most of the winter and
spring at Alta, Brighton, Solitude, and the backcountry between them. I find
that I spend most weeks just planning out the weekends ski trips. I'm always
watching the weather and trying to time those powder days right with my days
off. Luckily I have an understanding wife who encourages me to get out and
live.
Skiing to me is much more than just flying down the mountains on a couple of
boards. Skiing is freedom. A couple of years ago I heard of a local company
called Surface making skis that were amazing for the conditions we regularly get
here on the Wasatch. With names like "Live Life" and "New Life" of course I was
interested. I had a chance to demo a pair of Live Life's and was immediately
hooked. I bought a pair a couple weeks later. Next I got a pair of New Life's
which were complete game changers for me. I have skied on many different skis,
but have never had as much fun as on a pair of New Life's in the powder.
I've attached a few pictures. The first is staring down a run at Solitude after
the first big snow of this season back in October. The next two are of me
hiking and getting a little air off a jump I built with my son off of a little
wind lip that had formed over in Catherine's at Alta. The last is a powder
shot taken at Alta during one of those 3 foot storms we got this year.
I definitely feel that I'm part of the working class heroes. There are many
like me out there. People who just work and live to ski. To some people work
is life. To me work provides so I can live life. Thanks to all the people at
Surface for the great skis. It's a good company with a great philosophy. I
look forward to seeing what they come up with in the future.
Brigg Neilson"
